Tax Office Statistics - 2005 Update

Analysis of the latest Tax Office Statistics by charity researchers Givewell, published this week, confirms a consistent trend in increased claims of tax deductions for donations to charities and other public funds over a period of 12 years. Claims by individuals for tax deductible gifts of $1,472m were made in the 2005 tax year having risen from $1,165m in 2004 which is an increase of 26% (up from 18% in 2004 and 7.5% in 2003). An extra 439,000 taxpayers made a claim for a gift deduction in 2005 – contributing to an increase of more than 1,053,581 individuals (32%) claiming gift deductions over the last 10 years.
