23 June 2006 Analysis by charity researchers Givewell of the latest Tax Office Statistics, published this week, confirms a consistent trend in increased claims of tax deductions for donations to charities and other public funds over a period of 10 years. Claims by individuals for tax deductible gifts of $1,165m were made in the 2004 tax year having risen from $988m in 2003 which is an increase of nearly 18%. An extra 73,000 taxpayers made a claim for a gift deduction in 2004 – contributing to an increase of more than 700,000 individuals making gift deduction claims since 1995.
