Charities still in good financial shape: 2007 Interim Australian Charities Financial Analysis

14 April 2008

Analysis of the 2007 financial data of around 162 charities, listed by Givewell, shows that the not-for-profit sector is still in good shape financially and enjoying a buoyant economy, though significant uncertainties are developing.

The report shows that healthy growth was experienced in all key areas in 2007. Total income increased by 8% along with government contributions by 9%. Gross fundraising revenue also increased by 9%, and even when bequests are taken out of the picture (which rose by 5%) this 9% increase is sustained. The dollar amount of surplus/deficit held by charities received the greatest increase of 49%, and net assets and investments increased in value by 11% and 12% respectively.

Overall, the survey concludes that the charities sector has continued to benefit from strong economic times and is in good shape financially, though significant uncertainties are developing as the economic climate changes. Further trends will be examined in more detail in the full analysis of a larger sample of 2007 financial data to be released in late 2008.
