Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.
Background Information: The prevalence of diabetes and pre-diabetes in Australia is rising at an alarming rate with 3 million adult Australians affected. Even more startling is that 70% of people with diabetes will develop nation’s biggest killer – heart disease – which kills one Australian every 10 minutes. Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute is committed to combating obesity, diabetes and their main complications-heart disease and stroke through state of the art research, clinical care, education and advocacy. Baker IDI is an independent medical research institute reliant on the generosity of Australians to maintain its world-class research. It has bases in Melbourne, Alice Springs and Adelaide. Project Description: The Baker IDI Healthy Lifestyle Research Centre is being established to counteract the dire outlook for the nation’s health, by focusing on innovative and novel health measures to prevent the onset of disease. Researchers from many disciplines focus on lifestyle, nutrition and physical activity to examine the genetic and environmental factors influencing disease. The Centre is a crucial part of Baker IDI’s overall strategy to address diabetes and its many complications, including heart disease. Aim of Project: The aim of the Centre is to develop and implement preventative health strategies for the community and influence public health policy. From evidence-based research findings the Centre will find the ways to integrate novel and different approaches to physical activity and nutrition into everyday lives. It also aims to develop new drugs, devices and treatment options for people with diabetes, stroke and heart disease. The ultimate goal is to reduce death, disability and suffering, and to improve the health and quality of life for all Australians. Can donors/grant makers give directly for this project? Yes. The success of establishing such a breakthrough research centre depends on help from supporters. The Healthy Lifestyle Research Centre needs to be fully equipped.
