Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.
Background Information: Redkite is an Australian charity that supports children, young people and their families through cancer by providing emotional support, music therapy, financial assistance and educational services. Redkite also helps young people and families remain connected to information and resources through its email and telephone support service, accessible whether in hospital or at home. The organisation was founded in 1983 and was, until 1 August 2005, known as The Malcolm Sargent Cancer Fund for Children in Australia. Children from all major cities, regional and remote locations across Australia are supported by Redkite services coordinated from offices in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia. With the continuing support of the community, Redkite aims to further expand services in order to offer equality of care and support to all Australian children and young people coping with a cancer diagnosis. Project Description: Research has shown that music therapy has a positive impact on the confidence, self-esteem and well being of children and young people dealing with illnesses. Redkite music therapists work in paediatric oncology units and in specific adolescent and young adults (AYA) treatment units throughout Australia. Music Therapy provides children and young people with an enjoyable, supportive and creative environment in which they can express themselves, regain a sense of choice and control and have important areas of growth and development stimulated. Music Therapy also assists in pain management and strengthening a child or young person’s ability to cope with the stress of cancer and its treatment. Sir Malcolm Sargent, by whose name Redkite was formerly known, inspired our original development of this popular service. Can donors/grant makers give directly for this project? Yes. All donations over $2 are tax deductible.
