Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.
A common sight in many larger urban areas is the old man in the beanie and worn out joggers who wanders around the park talking to himself, or the one lying in a doorway exuding the smell of body odour and urine. Many are suffering the effects of mental illness or substance abuse, or emotional, physical or sexual abuse, which has left them broken and marginalised. For men such as these, the alienation from mainstream society is profound. They are different, they know they are different, and that difference is reinforced by the day-to-day reaction of those around them. The purpose of City Farm is to provide men such as these with an alternative community where they are able to live securely, and to rebuild a sense of self-worth and belonging. The first City Farm at Nowra opened eight years ago, and currently has ten residents. The Farm's slow growth from humble beginnings has been mirrored by the journey being taken by the men who live there as they strive to rebuild shattered lives. Those involved with the project hope that eventually some of the residents may be able to move back into mainstream society. Building on the success of the City Farm Project at Nowra, St Vincent de Paul hopes that many other 'City Farms' can be established across Australia, to support people as they move from isolation and ostracism to belonging. Can donors / grantmakers give directly for this project? Yes. If so, how? Donations can be made by cheque or credit card to: St Vincent de Paul NSW/ACT PO Box 5 Petersham, NSW, 2049 Is there an allowance for administration costs? Donors can request that 100% of their donation go to the City Farm Project. In general, St Vincent de Paul allows 5% for administration costs, and any donations that also provide for administration costs are greatly appreciated.
