Project Spotlight

Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.

Organisation: Pathways Foundation
Project Name: Pathways to Manhood program

Project description:

Pathways programs have been running for over 10 years now and their flagship program is the 'Pathways to Manhood' program. This is a five day camp for fathers and their sons which aims to:

  • Create strong and open relationships between boys and their dads.
  • Set up ongoing mentor and support systems for young men.
  • Encourage healthy relationships with mothers based on respect.
The camps are an incredible opportunity where the boys get to hear their father's stories, are challenged physically, mentally and emotionally and are publicly honoured by their fathers. Pathways camps prepare boys for life as young men, encouraging them to aim to be the best men that they can be and aim to equip them with tools to avoid the roads that lead to depression and underachievement.

Research shows that self esteem is the most important indicator of how well a young man will do in the future. Given that they receive their self esteem from their fathers and with further research showing that dads today in Australia are spending an average of 8 minutes a day individually with their children, the need for this type of program is more relevant than ever before.

Pathways camps now run in 8 regions around Australia and over 1000 boys and their dads having experienced the camps. Pathways' vision is for every young boy and girl in Australia to have the ability to attend these programs and a similar Mother-Daughter program is being trialed this year.
