Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project
for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on
how to give directly for this project.
Project description We have chosen to focus on an aspect of life that is crucially important for human well-being. As a statutory body to the Victorian Government we provide immediate and expedient assistance to any individual or family in Victoria who have suffered an emergency by supporting them over a difficult period. The project is designed to provide assistance for people who have suffered unexpected hardship and need immediate short term assistance. We then take preventative measures by referring them to the Committee's counselling services to ensure long term support, enabling them to take control over factors effecting their lives, ensuring a quality of life is maintained. Increasingly Victorian families are finding themselves without sufficient income to meet basic needs. People approach the Victorian Relief Committee from the most fundamental perspective due to major issues in their lives such as unemployment, sickness, crime, domestic violence, victims of addiction, floods, droughts and fire. Through our Family Services we provide material aid such as bedding, clothing, footwear, infant needs, kitchenware, food packs, food vouchers and financial aid to meet the immediate need. As a longer term solution we provide counselling services and financial counselling where appropriate. Can donors/grantmakers give directly for this project? Funds are urgently needed. If wishing to contribute to the Emergency Need Project, or the Victorian Relief Committee in general, please send cheque or money order (Payable to "Victorian Relief Committee") to:
Victorian Relief Committee A receipt will be forwarded. Is there an allowance for administration costs? The Victorian Government provides the Victorian Relief Committee with an administrative grant to be used exclusively for administration and staff costs. This gives a guarantee that 100 cents in every dollar donated is used for its intended purpose. With budget changes, rationalisation of health and welfare services and reallocation of funds, the responsibility to raise money which provides the actual relief services in community disaster situations is the responsibility of the Committee. This is why we need to directly seek out and access community resources, in order to maintain this essential service to the community in need. The work of the Committee's projects is wholly reliant on the support of corporations, manufacturers, philanthropic trusts, community groups, appeals and the goodwill and generosity of the general public, fulfilling our statutory requirements.
This month's nomination is by Givewell's Aneesh Sadarangani, who has made a personal donation to the project which has been matched by Givewell. Aneesh says " I selected this project because it provides material assistance to people in immediate need. Furthermore once the immediate need has been met, the organisation seeks a longer term solution through the provision of counselling services." |
