Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.
Surf Life Saving SA is a leading open water safety organisation with Rescue, Education and Prevention being the three core principles that programs and services are based upon. Water safety is a major issue for all Australians, with recent drownings and accidents highlighting the need for greater education to reduce the loss of life in aquatic environments. Last summer 63 people drowned nationally. Beach to Bush is a free program designed to educate children in rural South Australian communities about water safety. This classroom based multimedia presentation develops basic awareness and understanding of aquatic safety issues at a variety of venues including beaches, rivers, lakes, dams and pools. Drowning represents the fifth most common external cause of death after suicide, motor vehicle accidents, accidental falls and homicide, so to recreate safety at the beach or any aquatic environment, Surf Life Saving SA strongly recommends that everyone participate in open water safety and awareness programs. 92% of people visit a beach once a year and it's essential that they be armed with the appropriate information to safely enjoy our wonderful beaches. People who reside more than 50 km from the coast represent 40% of coastal drowning deaths, due to reduced access to Surf Safety information and lack of familiarity with dangers. These are the people that 'Beach to Bush' aims to educate and save. Tax-deductible donations of any size can help towards providing education to disadvantaged rural children.
