Project Spotlight

Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.

Organisation Asthma South Australia
Project Name Nebuliser and Peak Flow Meter Appeals

Project description
Asthma South Australia is currently focussing on easing the financial burden faced by many needy families who are affected by asthma, and who have trouble affording equipment which is vital in helping to manage and control asthma.

Peak flow meters measure how fast a person with asthma can get air out of their airways, and are a vital tool for knowing whether their asthma is under control. As a result, a person is able to adjust their medication, make an appointment with their doctor or admit themselves to hospital. For families in need, even peak flow meters which sell for around $20 can be out of reach.

Nebulisers can provide relief for asthma sufferers when a puffer is not enough. Having a nebuliser at home can make a huge difference to some people's ability to manage their asthma without needing to go to hospital. At around $130, however, even basic electric nebulisers are out of reach of many families. Battery-operated nebulisers which can allow the freedom to travel can cost up to $650.

Your tax-deductible donation of any size can help towards providing free peak flow meters and nebulisers to families in genuine need. These are vital pieces of equipment for many South Australian families with asthma. $130 will allow us to purchase an electric nebuliser to give to a family, $650 will allow us to purchase a travel nebuliser for a family, and $20 will buy a peak flow meter . Donors or grantmakers who fund the total cost of purchase will receive a letter of thanks giving details of how their donation has been used. All donors receive a receipt for tax purposes plus a letter of thanks from Asthma South Australia.

This Project Spotlight was selected by Givewell Research Analyst, Cate Smith:
So many people are affected by asthma, and we have all heard of cases where a person's asthma has quickly spiraled out of control with serious consequences. Making it possible for people to manage their asthma might literally mean the difference between life and death, and it must be an enormous relief to the people who are helped by this project to be able to do this.
