Project Spotlight

Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.

Organisation: Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC)
Project Name: Community Climate Challenge

Project Description:

The Community Climate Challenge provides easy, practical steps for communities to work together to save energy, save money and do something about climate change.

The Challenge is the latest initiative of the Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC) and was launched in the Clarence Valley on 12 May where there are currently hundreds of households registered to ‘take the Climate Challenge’. NCC is working with local councils, energy providers, local businesses, workplaces, churches, schools, community groups and local media, all of whom have thrown full support behind this initiative.

Through an interactive program of local events, support materials, web portal and media, NCC is working with communities to tailor an inclusive local program that inspires action by showing what people can achieve when they work together.

The objectives of The Climate Challenge are:
  1. To achieve measurable reductions in household greenhouse gas emissions in target regions in NSW;
  2. To inspire broader community action on climate change.
Participants of The Climate Challenge complete a series of easy steps to become involved in fighting climate change.

A Challenge ‘passbook’ guides participants through difference combinations of options they can choose to reduce their energy use.

Part 1 - In the home: The first step is for people to reduce their personal and household emissions through simple actions like installing energy efficient light bulbs and water saving showerheads or switching to GreenPower. A free energy efficient light bulb installation for every participant gets people started.

Part 2 - In the community: The second step is about joining forces and working together to make a bigger difference! It involves working in teams, whether it be your street, workplace, community group etc to get creative and develop ways to raise awareness about solutions to climate change in the local community. Each team is encouraged and supported to use their skills and imagination to inspire others. It is this second step of the project that makes The Challenge such a unique and exciting initiative.

The Challenge provides links in local communities to products, services and initiatives that can enable participants to save energy. The Challenge will expand and strengthen networks of people in the region to become active on climate change at a broader level, calling on governments to take serious action to address climate change.

Timeframe and Outcomes:

The Climate Challenge was launched in the Clarence Valley on 12 May, with a mid-way celebration and kick-start to part 2 planned for18 July, culminating in a final celebration on 29 August. Thus far over 4,500 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions have been saved as over 7,500 light bulbs have been replaced. Overall, NCC will produce case studies on combinations of choices people have made to reduce their energy use including the less tangible behavioural changes. For the Clarence, NCC is aiming for 400 households to participate in The Challenge by the mid-way event and 50 teams to form for part 2. The Challenge is soon to be rolled out on the Central Coast, with a 3rd region to follow. NCC would love to continue to develop The Challenge into a package that could be rolled out region by region across NSW, however, this is resource/funding dependant.

Can donors/grant makers give directly for this project? Yes. Donations are tax deductible and can be made specifically to the Community Climate Challenge or to the Nature Conservation Council of NSW in general.
