Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for
which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to
give directly for this project.
Background Information:
The Inspire Foundation was established in 1996 in direct response to the then escalating rates of youth suicide. Inspire combines technology with the direct involvement of young people to deliver innovative and practical online programs that prevent youth suicide and improve young people’s mental health and wellbeing.
Project Description:
Launched in 1998 in response to rising youth suicide rates, www.reachout.com is now an award-winning, established and trusted online service where young people aged 14-25 can find information, support and resources to help them improve their understanding of mental health issues, develop resilience and increase their coping skills and help seeking behaviour.
How does Reach Out help young people?
- Young people can 'FIND' over 500 pieces of text-based and multimedia content for download or print. Issues include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, relationships, sexuality and bullying. Content is written in consultation with mental health experts and young people.
- In 'CONNECT' young people can join the moderated community forums, read news blogs, get involved, and have their say. Community forums provide a safe and moderated network, made up of Reach Out staff and young people. Forums open at peak times when young people often feel alone, unsure and in need of help.
- 'Reach Out Central', especially popular with guys, is an interactive game where players test-drive life and learn from virtual experiences. Played from the view point of a new person in town, players tackle making friends, handling peer pressure, managing family relationships, and life choices.
- For those working with young people, Reach Out offers a comprehensive suite of resources for health care professional and teachers at www.ReachOutPro.com.au. Content is free, ready-to-use, comes in a variety of formats and can be applied in both clinical and classroom settings.
