Project Spotlight

Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.

Organisation: Enough is Enough Anti Violence Movement Inc.
Project Name: Road Trauma Support and Education Network

Background Information:

Enough is Enough is an anti violence project that is committed to reform societies attitudes towards crime, violence and anti social behaviour. The organisation has been established since 1994 and since then has been proactive in a number of areas. The organisation has been established since 1994 and has formed itself upon the highest ideals of human behaviour and in a positive and pro-active manner goes about the important business of reforming society’s attitudes to violence through greater understanding, education and support. One of the issues the organisation tackles “head on” is Road Trauma.

The Road Trauma Support and Education Network was originally the VISTA+E group (Vehicle Incident Support Team Australasia + Education). The concept was born in 1997 after the death of Alicia Snaith in an incident that occurred in Blaxland, in Sydney’s Blue Mountains district. Her father, Roger Snaith, as a response to his frustration with the system and the lack of support that he found during the early period after Alicia’s death, met with Ken Marslew who had also lost a son in tragic circumstances in 1994 and subsequently formed the organisation Enough is Enough Anti Violence Movement Inc. Through this meeting the VISTA+E group was formed, to provide support and guidance to those affected by Road Trauma.

Project Description:

The group now 10 years on, is known as the Enough is Enough Road Trauma Support and Education Network. Each year a great number of people lose their lives or are badly injured in accidents or road rage incidents. These tragedies cause immense emotional and physical pain for the survivors and the families of those people killed or injured. The sudden and tragic death of a family member or friend is traumatic and the grief of loss intense. The lives of those left behind are changed forever. Dealing with the trauma and grief and integrating this tragic event into daily living requires courage and the support of other people such as partners, families, friends and counsellors.

The Road Trauma Support and Education Network recognises that those who share a common experience can best understand and support others in their grief and pain. For this reason the Support Group aims to bring people together in a caring and safe environment to give and receive mutual support. The Support Network has over the years of operation supported thousands of individuals through the pain of loss and grief via support group facilitation; one on one counselling; unearthing the legal processes and the frustration that many individuals face having to go through the system and becoming proactive in the campaign to change traffic offenders attitudes to driving behaviour. Each support group meeting is facilitated by a professional counsellor, and there are currently support groups located in Sutherland, Mt Druitt and Gosford. Support groups can be organised in other areas should the public interest be there.

Now, Enough is Enough is involved in the court referred Traffic Offenders Program, it has other programs that involve understanding responsibility on the road that are taken into the school arena, and also a program that is being presented in correctional centres across NSW.

Enough is Enough is also inviting the general public to acknowledge the pain and suffering of the bereaved and injured in road crashes on “World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims” which takes place on Sunday 18th November 2007.
