Project Spotlight

Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.

Organisation Mineral Policy Institute
Project Name Global Mining Campaign

Historically, the quest for gold has caused more death and destruction than that of any other 'precious' material. Today, gold mining is polluting rivers with mine wastes and cyanide spills, displacing entire communities and causing widespread human rights abuses.

The Mineral Policy Institute is at the forefront of campaigns against the environmental and human rights abuses that arise from gold mining in Ok Tedi, Freeport, Baia Mare, Timbarra and Lake Cowal.

Over the past year, MPI has played a key role in establishing a Global Mining Campaign (with Friends of the Earth International, Project Underground and Third World Network Africa, among many others). As part of this campaign, MPI will intensively lobby for global standards and regulation in the mining industry at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in August 2002 and beyond.

There are alternatives to unsustainable gold mining. There is no need to go to the remotest parts of the world to chase this metal. There is already enough gold in bank vaults to meet our needs for hundreds of years.

Your donation will help MPI to promote alternatives to unsustainable gold mining, and force global mining companies to listen to the voices of the people whose lives they affect - and to take responsibility for their actions.
