Project Spotlight

Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.

Organisation: WWF Australia
Project Name: Recreational Fishing Impact Review

Project description: Recreational fishing is one of the most popular pursuits in Australia, with more than a quarter of all households having fishing tackle of some sort. At its best, recreational fishing can be a responsible way of enjoying a quality experience of wild rivers and coasts, respecting codes of conduct, and providing a positive example of stewardship of the natural environment. However at its worst, recreational fishing provides a cover for large scale harvesting, in the absence of any forms of controls or reporting that would safeguard long-term sustainability.

WWF will carry out an in depth study of the biological impacts of recreational fishing around Australia, using an independent scientific study, subject to careful peer review. The results of the report will be disseminated widely among policy makers and recreational fishing bodies, and will be accompanied by a paper highlighting management reforms and recommendations.

The study is expected to take twelve months to complete, including a roadshow for the distribution of the report and recommendations paper at the state and commonwealth level, and will result in a solid, scientifically informed basis for better management practices in the recreational fishing sector, ensuring a sustainable angling future, and healthy wild rivers and coasts.

Total $45,000 over 1 year.
