Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.
The International Diabetes Institute is committed to the betterment of Australia's health. Since 1975, the International Diabetes Institute has provided specialist care and support for people living with diabetes and their families, contributed enormously to the body of research on diabetes and it's complications and promoted healthy lifestyle behaviours including regular physical activity and healthy eating. As the leading national and international centre for diabetes care, research and education, the International Diabetes Institute strives to develop the capacity to cure and prevent diabetes and its complications. A team of researchers at the International Diabetes Institute recently released some encouraging results for people with diabetes - they found that regular strength training, coupled with a moderate weight loss program, significantly improves the management of this condition. This information comes at a critical time as Australia faces a diabetes epidemic. Over 500 000 Australians has diabetes and for every known case, there is one undiagnosed. This equates to a staggering 1 million Australians living with diabetes - and the rate continues to escalate. By participating in regular strength training programs, people with diabetes can prevent or delay medications. Furthermore, this type of exercise may ultimately lead to a reduced risk of diabetes complications, including eye, kidney and heart disease. The International Diabetes Institute has used this research to develop the Lift for Life program - an education and strength training community-based program. The challenge now is to ensure this program is accessible to all people living with diabetes and the community at large. You can help the institute help people living with diabetes and their families by making a donation. Your generous contribution will ensure the continuation of our vital work - research, education and community programs like Lift for Life. Can donors/grant makers give directly for this project?
