Project Spotlight

Welcome to Givewell's Project Spotlight. Each month we highlight a project for which a charity is currently seeking funds. We also provide details on how to give directly for this project.

Organisation Hanover Welfare Services
Project Name Healthy Connections

When working with people who are homeless it is easy to concentrate on providing for their immediate need - housing - and forget the myriad of other activities which help people to develop a secure, independent and healthy life.

Healthy Connections aims to help fill some of the gaps, created by their homelessness, in the lives of the people who access Hanover Welfare Services. The project operates in two ways. First, it encourages homeless women, men, families and young people to link into health and recreation activities that already operate in most communities. This may include for example providing resources to enable people to join a performing arts group, or to help them participate in a yoga class or join a football or tennis club.

Second, Healthy Connections provides resources to people who have specific health needs, including for example having dental work done or obtaining eye glasses or prescription medication - all items which most of us take for granted, but which homeless people find impossible to obtain.

Hanover provides services to many people who have been homeless for a considerable period. During that time, many people have lost contact with family and friends, have lost most of their personal possessions and have few resources. This leaves them very isolated and vulnerable, and consolidates the difficulties they already face in overcoming their situation.

Hanover's research and experience has shown that linking people back into the mainstream community is one of the most effective ways of helping people acquire the skills and confidence necessary for them to overcome their situation. Healthy Connections provides the means for this personal development to occur.

Healthy Connections can use donations of all sizes. For example, $20 will allow someone to join a swimming class, while $200 will allow emergency dental work to be done, or glasses to be purchased.
