The project will be managed by a Steering Committee comprised of representatives from Ted Noffs Foundation, South Eastern Sydney Area Health Service, NSW Parents and Citizens Association, Prince of Wales Hospital Adolescent Unit, NSW Department of Education and Training and the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre.

The Schools Program needs to extend its reach and duplicate similar services in the Western Sydney, Cabramatta, South Western and Nepean regions. The Program needs committed on-going funding to do this.

The funds will be used to provide:
  1. Information, support and counselling for parents regarding young people and alcohol and other drug use.
  2. Counselling for students at participating schools or at the Ted Noffs Foundation.
  3. Consultation to school staff to develop drug prevention strategies for the whole school.
  4. Advice on drug education resources.
  5. The T.N.F Skills Train - a group program for students with drug use problems, 5 sessions held weekly at participating schools or at the Ted Noffs Foundation. Teaching skills to help students manage their lives and drug issues.
After completing the program participants will be offered follow up sessions (to be negotiated as needed) to address any issues and build on skills learned.

Evaluation:
  1. Participants in Skills Train or 6 or more counselling sessions will be requested to self report level of drug use pre and post participation in the intervention and at 3-month follow-up.
  2. Participants will complete a client satisfaction questionnaire including questions on relevance, content and effectiveness.
  3. School staff will complete a satisfaction questionnaire including questions on relevance, content and effectiveness.

This month's nomination is by Givewell's Caroline Borge, who has made a personal donation to the project which has been matched by Givewell.

Caroline says
"I sponsored this project because it addresses a serious problem in our society which is affecting young people. Drug and alcohol use by young people is a growing problem that needs support. With more funding this program can expand their work to cover other areas of Sydney and NSW.

I was also impressed to see that the information provided by this organisation showed me just where my donation would go and the impact it would have."
