Givewell Category Definitions

Givewell allocates up to two cause categories for each organisation. In general, the categories Women, Children and Youth Support will not generally be used as primary categories, since they are not causes in and of themselves, but are used where they have been specified as the target group of an organisation's services.

Where an organisation has a diverse range of activities, primary and secondary categories will be allocated according to those activities which form the largest part of the organisations programs, and/or which receive the largest share of funding.

The categories are:
  1. Aboriginal Support. Organisations dedicated to the provision of charitable services for indigenous people.
  2. Aged Care. Accommodation, care and welfare services for the elderly or infirm.
  3. Animal Welfare. Protection and care of animals .
  4. Arts/Culture. Organisations such as museums, ballet companies, libraries and orchestras.
  5. Children. Any charitable activity which relates primarily to children under 13 years of age.
  6. Conservation and Environment. Advocacy and conservation activities related to environmental issues.
  7. Drug/ Alcohol Addiction. Organisations primarily involved with assisting people (and their family and carers) overcome drug and/or alcohol addiction.
  8. Emergency Services. Organisations which provide medical and non-medical emergency services.
  9. Health Promotion. Organisations which promote individual and community health, either in relation to a single cause or disease, or generally.
  10. Hospitals. Hospitals and foundations involved in fundraising for hospitals. Foundations raising funds for medical research are classified as "Medical Research".
  11. Humanitarian. Organisations committed to and or advocating a cause which affects the broader community by virtue of natural causes, cultural or political influences.
  12. Major Diseases. Organisations primarily involved with and the treatment, care and support of people (and their family or carers) with life threatening diseases considered to be prevalent within the community, and with research into those diseases.
  13. Medical Services. Organisations which provide general or community based medical services, which are not hospitals.
  14. Medical Research. Organisations primarily involved with medical research.
  15. Mental Illness. Care and support services to people (and their family and carers) suffering from mental illness.
  16. Overseas Aid. Provision of charitable services (health, welfare, education etc) to overseas countries using funds and volunteer work sourced from Australia.
  17. People with Disabilities. Provision of services to people (and their family or carers) suffering from long term or permanent disabilities.
  18. Public Foundation. Defined as a Charitable Trust, with tax deductibility status, that is promoted to the public, to receive lump sum contributions, the investment returns from which are distributed to approved beneficiaries, under guidelines agreed between the benefactor and the trustee.
  19. Unemployment. Organisations which provide employment services, either as a primary or a secondary element of their services. This includes not for profit employment services working as part of the Commonwealth Government Job Network scheme, general welfare services which offer employment services, and organisations working with people with disabilities which offer employment placement services.
  20. Welfare. Organisations devoted to the provision of community welfare services to people in need.
  21. Women. An organisation which pursues any cause by focussing on women and their interests.
  22. Youth Support. Any welfare, disability, medical or support service focussing on youth (13-21 years).
